This procedure has been tested and found to work on MLML computers running XP and Windows Vista. Before you install SPSS 16.0 for Windows, if you can, turn off any firewalls on your computer. (If this install fails you may want to reattempt it with any anti-virus software turned off as well.)

  3. Choose the option that begins with '"Site License" then click "Next"

  5. Click "next" at read me file
  6. Enter the following information:
    * User Name = (Your Name First + Last Name)
    * Organization = San Jose State University
    * Serial No. = The license key is in a text file located in the directory containing the installer files on the file server \\atlantic.
  7. Select Default Destination Folder then click "Install".
(Some windows may open and close on your computer. This is normal.)
  8. When "License & Register SPSS 16.0 for Windows" comes up, uncheck the "Register With spss.com" checkbox then click "OK" to start the license authorization process.
  9. Be sure "License my product now" is selected. Click "Next" or press the Enter key.
  10. The next screen is the "Overview of Licensing" screen. Click "Next" or press the Enter key.
  11. You will see a screen that says "Enter Codes." As you did before, enter the license key from above.
  12. When you see the screen '"Select Authorization Method" select "Internet" (The alternative is painful.) When complete you should see "Successfully processed all codes", then click "Next."
  13. When you see "Licensing Completed" message click "Finish".
  14. Restore all Firewall and Anti-Virus settings. Restart the Computer.
  15. Run SPSS from the default location:
    Start>Programs>SPSS Inc>SPSS 16.0>SPSS 16.0

Re: Install SPSS 16

Postby smcmillan » Tue May 19, 2009 11:05 am

I have installed SPSS 16 onto my computer (running VISTA) 4 or 5 times using the instructions posted. It says I'm licensed until August, but when I try to open it, it says licensed failed. There is a folder in the SPSS 16 folder that has drivers (3). Am I supposed to download one of those? If so, which one? All of them? One of them?
PS If a driver is needed, you should post that to your "Install SPSS 16" instructions.

You shouldn't need to install any "drivers". Make sure you install the Hotfix (allows you to view SPSS .syo files created by earlier versions of SPSS in SPSS 16.0) and both patches (install these three files in order of oldest to newest, to figure this out look at the date modified) before trying to open SPSS 16.0 for the first time. You may have to restart your computer between patches for them to install completely.

It sounds like the license for SPSS 16 has expired. You can update the license by copying the license # from the license file in the SPSS directory on fileservermac (for Mac OS X) or atlantic (for Windows). You will need to use the SPSS License Authorization Wizard in the SPSS directory on your computer to update the license.

I just updated my license for SPSS 16.0 on Mac OS 10.5 using the license key on the network. In order for it to work, you need to only copy it until just before the ':wq', copying and pasting the entire line including these characters will not work.

License keys for SPSS 16 are available in the following locations:

Windows: \\atlantic\MLMLAPPS\SPSS\SPSS16\
Mac OS X: smb://fileservermac/SPSS/SPSS16/

Use the License Authorization Wizard To update the SPSS license:
  1. Run the License Authorization Wizard from the following location:
    • Windows: Start > All Programs > SPSS 16 > SPSS 16.0 > SPSS 16.0 License Authorization Wizard
    • Mac OS X: /Macintosh HD/Applications/SPSSInc/SPSS16/SPSS 16.0 License Authorization Wizard.app
  2. Make sure License my product now is selected then click Next.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter the authorization code from the text file on the server indicated above. Click Next.
  5. Make sure Internet is selected then click Next.
  6. Once the authorization is complete click Next
  7. Click Finish.

Re: Install SPSS 16

Six hours spent trying to install new 2009-2010 code for SPSS (my license had expired). Here's what I did and learned, in hopes that you may avoid some of my frustration.

(re)Install of SPSS 16 for Mac, running OS 10.5.8 (Leopard)
initial issue: SPSS Processor not available (license had expired)

Tried running SPSS InstallWizard to enter new license code provided on the network (fail).
>>InstallWizard would run, generate a new code, only to have the following message "no licenses found for >>this product"

Completely deleted SPSS 16 and attempted to reinstall software from scratch (downloaded from Network)

ERROR: "SPSS has detected previous versions of SPSS 16 on your machine. You must delete these versions before proceeding"

SOLUTION: using Uninstall failed to completely delete previous versions. Instead, follow these three steps:
>>>Step 1: Move SPSSInc folder from Applications into the trash
>>>Step 2: Remove SPSS Preference files into trash (go to Users>home>library>preferences. Delete all SPSS preference files
>>>Step 3: (Important!) Remove "INSTALLSHIELD" from home directory (SPSS Uninstall failed to do this properly)

Reinstalled SPSS and attempted to run Install Wizard again
(Fail): Install Wizard continued giving message "no licenses found for this product" after generating codes

Tried EMAILING SPSS to get code
(Success!): Running InstallWizard, chose "email" option. "Send EMail" option failed (button did nothing), instead chose web-based mail. Generates instructions on how to send an email to SPSS to get complete license code. Followed instructions (basically copy and paste into email body)
(wait 5 minutes): SPSS sends automatic license code of about 40 characters.

RUN INSTALL WIZARD
Launch AuthorizationWizard via the Applications>SPSS Inc>SPSS 16.0 >License Authorization Wizard.
Choose"License my product now." Click NEXT and enter the license code provided in this email.
Insert the above license code in the LICENSE CODE field.
Click next and the licensing of the software is complete.

Success!

This workaround was needed because the automatic authorization of the license code would not go through and because the previous version of SPSS was not fully removed from my machine during uninstall.
If you have either of these problems this may help

Thanks for your helpful step-by-step, Thew. I was getting the same error message ("SPSS has detected previous versions of SPSS 16 on your machine. You must delete these versions before proceeding"). Once I deleted the SPSS Preference files and Installshield as you indicated, I was able to install SPSS again. (However, I was able to copy the license key from the server, didn't have to email them).

Thanks for sharing after enduring 6 hours of frustration – definitely helped me out!
