Postby rfrantz » Thu Apr 09, 2009 11:53 am

For Kyocera Printers (ex. Library and Admin) please see, "How do I install a Kyocera copier as a printer on my computer". *** LINK UPDATE NEEDED ***

This guide contains instructions for:
  • Windows XP and 2000
  • Windows Vista
  • Mac OS X

WINDOWS XP and 2000:

Step 1 - Download and install the printer drivers:

Download the printer driver to your computer and run the driver installer application. For more information see "Download software from MLML file servers over the network". Once the driver files are unpacked to a directory on your computer, start the Add Printer Wizard if it does not start automatically. (Take note of where the files are placed) If the wizard doesn't start automatically, you can start it manually as outlined in the next step.

Step 2 - Install the printer:
  1. Go to Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes > Add printer
The "Add Printer Wizard" should start.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Click on the "Local printer attached to this computer' radio button and make sure 'Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer' is NOT checked.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Click on the 'Create a new port' radio button and select 'LPR port' as the type of port.
( If "LPR port" does not appear in the list of ports, follow the instructions to install the LPR protocol.)

***NOTE: If you are re-installing a printer that you have already installed in the past, the LPR port will already exist. In this case: Select the correct port from the "Use the following port" drop down list and click next.***
(Refer to this list of MLML Network Printer DNS names.)
  6. Click Next. An "Add LPR compatible printer" popup should open.
  7. Enter the host name of the printer in the "Name or address of server providing lpd" text box.
(Refer to this list of MLML Network Printer DNS names.)
  8. Leave the "Name of printer or print queue on that server" text box empty.
    Click OK.
  9. Click on the Have Disk... button.
(See How do I install software over the network? if your unsure of how to get access to atlantic.)
  10. Navigate to the driver directory created by the driver installer, select the file with the .inf file extension and click OK.
  11. If prompted, select the make and model listed in What are the DNS addresses of MLML's networked printers and click Next.
  12. If you would like this to be the default printer, select the Yes radio button and click Next.
  13. Keep Do not share this printer selected and click Next.
  14. Check the Print a test page checkbox and click Next.
  15. Review the settings in the final page and click Finish.
  16. Check the printer to make sure a test page was printed and you are done!

There are mainly two different types of print drivers, PCL(Printing command language ) and PS(postscript). If you tend to print a lot of acrobat and or VECTOR based imaging, you will want to use a postscript driver, to achieve the best speed and quality. Likewise printing a JPEG image using postscript is just a waste of time, and your better off using a PCL driver. You may want to install the printer twice and use different drivers for both. That way you can have the option of using whichever one is suitable.

WINDOWS VISTA:

Step 1 - Download and install the printer drivers:

Download the printer driver to your computer and run the driver installer application. For more information see this guide for Downloading and Installing software over the network. Once the driver files are unpacked to a directory on your computer, start the Add Printer Wizard if it does not start automatically. (Take note of where the files are placed) If the wizard doesn't start automatically, you can start it manually as outlined in the next step.

Step 2 - Install the printer:
  1. Go to Start > Control Panel
  2. Find the Printer Configuration Window:
-In "Home View" under Hardward & Sound, click Printer link
-In "Classic VIew" click the Printers icon
  3. Click Add Printer
  4. Choose Add a Local Printer
  5. Choose Create a New Port
  6. In the drop down menu, select LPR Port
( If "LPR port" does not appear in the list of ports, follow the instructions to install the LPR protocol.)
  7. In the "Add LPR-compatible Printer" window:
-In "Name or Address of server providing LPD", enter the DNS name of the printer you want to add (Refer to this list of MLML Network Printer DNS names.)

NOTE: If a warning message appears, make sure you are verified with Cisco Clean Access. You can do this by:
    • going to the caserver and singing in
    • logging in to the atlantic file server
  8. Select the manufacturer and model for the printer you want to install (see the link above to list of printers)
  9. If you would like this to be the default printer, select the Yes radio button and click Next.
  10. Keep Do not share this printer selected and click Next.
  11. Check the Print a test page checkbox and click Next.
  12. Review the settings in the final page and click Finish.
  13. Check the printer to make sure a test page was printed and you are done!

Mac OS X:

Step 1 - Download and install the printer drivers:

Download the printer driver to your computer and run the driver installer application. For more information see this guide for Downloading and Installing software over the network. Once the driver files are installed, proceed to the next step.

Step 2 - Install the printer:
  1. Go to System Preferences > Print & Fax and click on Setup Printers or the "+".
  2. Click the Add printer icon.
  3. Choose IP Printing.
  4. Printer type: LPD/LPR.
  5. In the Printer Address field type the DNS address of the printer. See this list of MLML Network Printer DNS names
  6. The computer will auto detect the printer. It should say "Valid and complete address" under the address field.
  7. Leave the "Queue Name" field blank.
  8. In the "Print Using" field choose the printer manufacturer and model of the printer you are trying to install for the Printer Model.
(If the printer you are trying to install is not listed, reboot your computer in order for the drivers to install.)
  9. Click Add and you are done!

Having trouble re-installing printer that aready exists?

Postby Library » Wed May 06, 2009 3:29 pm

Windows XP:

***Students who previously had an old printer installed will already have created the LPR port on their computer and instead of clicking on create a new port, need to select the correct port from the Use the following port drop down menu.***

1) When you go to MLMLAPPS on atlantic, the only file in the Xerox>6360DP folder is an .exe file, not an .inf file. Luckily it is the only file in the folder making it obvious that it is the one you want.

2) Once you run the .exe file, it downloads the .inf file very quickly to C:Program files\XEROX.

3) Now you can follow the steps in the post above.

Note to Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6) users: The printer drivers on the network may not be compatible with Mac OS 10.6. Please visit the printer manufacturer's website to download and install the proper drivers compatible with Mac OS 10.6.
